OUR PICK FOR A FIRST VISIT
Historic Room
Main House · heart of the estate
Full of character and the most accessible way into Blackberry Farm. Ideal for a couple.
WALLAND, TENNESSEE · BORDERING GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

Our verdict
A 4,200-acre estate in the Smokies foothills, cared for by the Beall family for half a century and celebrated for its food, its wine and the warmth of its welcome. Meals are included, the usual minimum is three nights and peak dates book up months ahead. Not cheap, and not close to Nashville. But for a once-in-a-lifetime anniversary or family milestone, nothing in the South compares.

“A guest on a grand and generous Southern family estate, which is exactly what it is.”
The Beall family's stewardship began in 1976, when this was a six-bedroom inn. It has grown into a world-renowned retreat without losing its personal touch: antiques, deep sofas, open fires and views of the Smokies.
Days move gently: fly fishing in a mountain stream, lunch on a porch, the spa or the trails, then dressing for dinner at The Barn, with the farm's sheep and truffle dogs along the way. Quieter, more traditional and far more secluded than Southall.
